My relationship with the internet

Sunday, July 12th, 2009
You just have a different relationship with somebody when you’re looking at them than you do when you’re punching away at a keyboard and some symbols come back.  I suspect that extending that form of abstract and remote relationship, instead of direct, personal contact, is going to have unpleasant effects on what people are like.  It will diminish their humanity.

A (Slightly Public) Proclamation

Saturday, July 11th, 2009

…and either a tautology or a contradiction in the title.  If it is a public proclamation then that’s a little redundant: a proclamation is a public announcement.  Calling it semi-public rather implies that it’s not a proclamation.  Still, it’s only “semi-public” because nobody’s listening.  My poor, neglected blog is tatty and unused and so I say this, for anyone stumbling past, for anyone who still checks this, and for my 52 followers on Twitter:

By tomorrow morning, I intend to have a new theme and to be ready to start using this blog again.

I am intending to code something minimalist “from scratch” i.e. borrowing various bits of code from past projects and other themes, rather than just modifying someone else’s theme.  Even with coffee and discipline I suspect that this may be rather beyond me, but I do at least intend to try.

Glass Vase Again

Thank you, Songbird.  I open up my blog and you automatically queue up Tattle Tale and Go Sailor. Just what I needed.

Hypertext

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

It feels good to be writing some HTML again.  It’s muchly preferable to

./compile
make
make install

…which seems to have made up a large portion of what I’ve been typing for the last couple of days .

Anyway, I’m writing the new Elec.Soc website.  My blog remains neglected.

Husker Du

Monday, August 4th, 2008

Oh my poor, neglected blog.  I’ll come back to you soon, and you’ll be shiny and pretty and full of posts, I promise.

Anyway, I was just listening to last.fm, and “Don’t Want to Know if You Are Lonely” by Husker Du came on and triggered a few thoughts:

  1. I can see where a lot of Green Day’s inspiration came from.
  2. I don’t listen to Green Day anymore
  3. I need to get over myself and listen to Green Day again

Reformat

First post after a shiny reinstall of Windows.  I’m running Firefox 3 now, too, and it’s also rather shiny.

Life Update

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

What am I up to these days, seeing as it’s been a fair while since my last post?

I’m back in Hampshire and not even half a week’s gone by before my sleep pattern’s messed up, and I’m up at 2am watching Dresden Dolls video. Par for the course, really.

While you’re here, I’ll share some nice tracks from the But I’m a Cheerleader soundtrack:

Tattle Tale: Glass Vase Cello Case

Go Sailor: Ray of Sunshine

Royal Mail

Wednesday, May 14th, 2008
Nigel Stapleton, Postcomm’s chairman, told the BBC that without private sector involvement, Royal Mail may require a government subsidy.

I struggle to find the right response. “Better the devil you know”? “Lesser of two evils”? “So what?”?
